Leading Problems with Vinyl Replacement Windows

If you are thinking about getting new windows, then research often begins with finding the right window frame material. The most popular replacement windows in Portland, OR are usually wood, aluminum, fiberglass, and vinyl—with vinyl windows being the most popular because they have good performance ratings for a relatively affordable price. Unfortunately, there are several problems often associated with vinyl windows. Here are some of the most common problems to watch for and what consumers can do to avoid them:

1. Seal Failure

The leading problem with vinyl windows is seal failure. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause pressure cracks that break the glass. But this isn’t a common problem. More often the seals on windows fail because the window frame and the glass do not expand and contact at the same rate. And with continued exposure to hot and cold temperatures, the seals will eventually wear out and fail. And if a seal on a vinyl window fails, the window sash needs to be replaced.

2. Warping

Vinyl window frames are more prone to warping. High-quality products should be able to withstand warping for ten years or more. But even the most expensive vinyl will start to soften and warp if temperatures reach more than 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Again, this isn’t a major concern for Oregon. Even on sunny days, the temperature between the panes and drapes will only reach just over 100 degrees.

3. Neglected Maintenance

Vinyl windows do not rust, rot, scratch, or fade. They are durable and extremely low maintenance. But neglect of these windows or improper maintenance can result in premature window failure. It is important to inspect and clean windows at least once a month to make sure everything is performing as it should. Routine maintenance involves cleaning the tracks, sills, frames, and glass. Mild detergent, water, a soft bristle brush, and a soft cloth are the only tools needed. Never use harsh chemicals, abrasives, or power washers on vinyl windows.

4. Stripped Cranks

Casement and awning windows are popular window styles with several benefits. They are great for natural light, views, and ventilation. But it is possible to strip the cranks on these windows by tightening them too much. The crank does not work to create a tighter seal. The locks and latches are what pull the sash tight against the frame. And tightening the crank too much strips the mechanism and eventually it will not function properly.

5. Loss of Viewing Area

One thing to also keep in mind is vinyl windows have wider frames than other window materials. Aluminum, fiberglass, and even wood windows have a fairly narrow profile. But vinyl windows require more width to improve strength and durability. This means homeowners could lose some of their viewing area when switching from another window material to vinyl. It won’t be as noticeable on larger window installations, but it will significantly cut down on the view on smaller windows.
