Our installation crews take great measures to work quickly and efficiently. They also take steps to keep your home clean and safe during window removal and installation. But before the installation of replacement windows in Portland, OR, there are a few things you can do to prepare your home. These simple steps can go a long way in making sure your project runs smoothly and efficiently. Here are a few things you should do:
1. Move Furniture and Wall Décor
About a week before window installation, you should start moving your furniture and clearing the walls in areas where you are getting replacement windows. Anything in proximity to your windows could get in the way. It could also be prone to accidental damage. So before installation, you should take down any artwork or pictures and clear as much space around the windows as you can.
2. Clear a Pathway
During installation, the workers will likely need access both inside and outside your home. That could mean a lot of traipsing back and forth. For this reason, it is a good idea to start clearing the walkways in and out of your home. Inside you should remove hall rugs or side tables that could trip people up. Outside you will want to coil up your hoses, remove patio furniture, and clear the areas below your windows as much as you can.
3. Put Down Drop Cloths
Installation crews will bring some drop cloths to help contain some of the construction debris. That said, it isn’t a bad idea to use sheeting to cover some of the other furniture in your home. This will reduce dust and clean up once the project is complete.
4. Remove Window Treatments
One day before window installation you will want to take down any window coverings. This includes drapes, blinds, curtains, or shutters. This will save the installation crews a lot of time. And if you plan to use these same window coverings again you should find a clean, safe place to store them until you are ready to put them back up.
5. Plan to Keep Pets and Children Out of the Way
You will also want to make a plan for pets and children so they are not underfoot during installation. The best advice we can give is to warn children well in advance and do what you can to keep them out of the house. This may be easier said than done, especially if your kids need to be home with you during installation.
6. Give Installers Access
You might be surprised how often we show up to a job site and are unable to get inside right away. It is important to have someone home on the day of installation who can let the job crews into the home. And if you have a security system, you should make sure you have contacted them to let them know what will be going on. This is especially true if you have any window or door sensors for your home.
