Choosing the Longest-Lasting Replacement Windows

Getting replacement windows in Portland, OR is a significant investment. And you want your new windows to last for years to come, possibly even for the rest of your time in the house. But how long do new windows last? It isn’t something you can easily pin down. Replacement windows have varying lifespans, and the factors are not always within your control. For example, climate and temperature fluctuations can cause premature window failure. But there isn’t much you can do about the weather. What you do have control over is the window frame material, glazing options, installation, and maintenance of your replacement windows.

1. Window Frame Material

The first thing to do is to choose replacement windows made from durable materials. Vinyl is a popular option because it is more affordable and will not warp, rust, rot, chip, or fade. It is also fairly low maintenance. That said, most vinyl windows only last about 15 to 20 years before they need to be replaced. Fiberglass windows are more expensive. Again, the material will not warp, rust, rot, scratch, or fade. But unlike vinyl, the material expands and contracts at the same rate as the glass window panes. This largely reduces the risk of seal failure, which is why fiberglass replacement windows can last for 30 to 40 years or more.

2. Glazing Options

Choosing the right glazing options is another way to increase the lifespan of replacement windows. Impact resistant glass is an important feature in areas where extreme weather and hurricanes are commonplace. Manufacturers sandwich a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) between two layers of glass. Not only does it take more to shatter impact resistant glass, but the panes remain largely in place even if they have been broken. This glazing technology would be a nice addition if you want to increase the strength and durability of your windows.

3. Professional Installation

You can get the nicest and most expensive replacement windows on the market, but they will not do you any good without professional installation. Window installation is meticulous work. One small mistake could lead to premature leaks or window failure. You want your windows installed by professionals who get training directly from the manufacturer if you want your windows to last. One way to understand what type of installation you get is to look closely at the warranty, not just for the products, but also on the installation.

4. Routine Cleaning and Maintenance

The last thing you can do to increase the lifespan of your replacement windows is to take care of them. Before you purchase your windows make sure you understand proper maintenance. Wood windows require a lot of maintenance if you want them to last for more than a couple of decades. And while vinyl and fiberglass are fairly low maintenance, it is still important to clean the frames and the glass, as well as clean and lubricate the tracks, hinges, or cranks.
