Most of the accidents that happen to your children will happen at home—with falls being the most common. Children are mostly unaware of the risks around them and windows, even those with screens, could pose a very real threat. The amazing things going on outside of the glass will often attract your children. But with all the excitement, they could be putting themselves in danger. Second story windows especially could cause serious injuries or even fatalities if you are not careful. But you shouldn’t dread your windows. Instead, following these steps will help you protect your children and give you peace of mind.
Best Ways to Protect Children from Windows
Here are a few things that you can do to improve the safety of your windows:
1. Clear the Area
If you have tables or sofas close to the windows, you should rethink the placement of the furniture items. These allow your children to climb and gain access to the windows. Do this before you look for any babyproofing products because you might find that some of your windows no longer need extra protection. Otherwise, you need to find other ways to protect your children.
2. Window Guards
Standard window screens are not enough to help keep your children safe. And childproof window screens do not exist. Your best bet is to install window guards. These grille-type protectors act like a baby gate, except for your windows. They limit your children’s access and prevent child window falls. And while they are difficult for children to operate, adults can still gain easy access to the windows if you want to open and close them.
3. Childproof Locks
One of the best ways to keep your children safe is shutting the window and locking it. If you don’t have them, you can invest in childproof locks. There are a variety of products you can find that lock sliding, single-hung, and double-hung windows.
4. Safe Blinds or Shades
The cords on blinds and shades are another hazard for your children. Children can get tangled up in the strings. To prevent the risk of accidental strangulation, invest in cordless blinds or shades. And if your child is old enough to understand, it is important to sit down with them and talk about not playing with the blinds and shades.
5. Window Stops
There are a few products you can use that work as window stops. One is a childproof wedge that prevents sliders as well as single and double-hung windows from opening the windows too wide. Just be sure when you install them, the window does not open more than four inches wide. Another option is a Charley bar. It works like a boom gate, dropping into place when the window shuts. And if you install it upside down and out of reach, it can work to help childproof your windows.
6. Laminated Glass
Another option is choosing laminated glass. While this may shatter on impact, the glass will not break off in large shards. Instead, the glass remains intact, adhering to a membrane fused between the panes.
