7 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Replacement Windows

Windows have a huge impact on your home. And choosing to get replacement windows in Hillsboro, OR is a big decision and investment. It can be overwhelming to choose the right material, style, and glazing options. Fortunately, once you make those decisions you can leave much of the heavy lifting to the installation crew. To help the installation go as quickly and smoothly as possible there are a few things you can do to prepare your home, including:

  1. Remove Curtains and Wall Hangings

This is the first thing you should tackle a day or two before the installation. Drapes, rods, blinds, and extra hardware around your old windows will certainly get in the way. Removing them and storing them elsewhere will give the installation crews easy access to your windows. You should also remove any pictures, mirrors or wall hangings in proximity to your windows so installers don’t accidentally knock them off the walls.

  1. Clear a Space

In addition to removing window coverings and wall hangings, you should also consider moving furniture away from your windows. You don’t have to necessarily remove them from the space, but at least to the other side of the room where they are out of the way.

  1. Cover Furniture

Window removal and installation does involve construction dust. The installers will take certain measures to keep your home clean, like adding drop cloths to their workspace. But dust can travel. So if you are already in possession on some extra sheets or drop cloths, you can take the added measure of covering your own furniture.

  1. Make a Path

Installers will work both outside and inside your home. This means they will likely need a path from the front door to other parts of your home. To make the trek easier while they haul tools and supplies, try creating a clear path for them to use. Make sure you pick up rugs, toys, and remove cords.

  1. Prepare the Outside

Just as you clear the space inside, you should also do what you can to give workers space outside. Remove any patio furniture, pots, planters, or hoses that might get in the way. For the most part, workers will do what they can to avoid your plants and shrubs. That said, if you are willing to go the extra step you can move some of your flowers into pots if you have a flowerbed blow a window getting replaced.

  1. Put Pets Away

You probably don’t want pets underfoot while installers are working in your home. You might plan to lock them in a kennel outside or crate inside during installation.

  1. Give the Workers Access

Last but not least, you need to give the installation team access to your home. Usually, this means a homeowner needs to be available to unlock doors and address questions the crew might have. You should also inform your security company if you have any sensors installed on your windows and doors.
